Frederick’s Opera Dreams
Arias and Duets by Carl Heinrich Graun and Johann Adolph Hasse and Musik by Friedrich II.
Musical Direction: Claudia Eder
Soloist: Prize winner of the International Voice Competition 2012
When Fredrick became King of Prussia, the passionate flutist and opera lover had an opera house built, where Italian operas were performed every year during the Berlin “Carnival”. Apart from this, he also composed drafts for libretti and issued instructions to his court conductor Graun.
It is said that arias, duets and sonatas by Hasse und Graun had the King go into raptures. In the hall of mirrors of the Rheinsberg castle, which Frederick once designed together with Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff and which has now again been restored to its original splendour, we will be performing excerpts from Graun’s operatic works, thus also from Le feste galanti, a piece that Frederick II had performed on the occasion of his mother’s birthday in 1747.
Frederick composed some musical embellishments to Hasse’s Cleofide and in addition to this his grave c-Moll is also included in the programm.
