Crown Prince Frederick
Opera by Siegfried Matthus
Musical Direction: Daniel Hoyem-Cavazza;
Directed by: Kay Kuntze
Soloist: Prize winner of the International Voice Competition 2012
By means of film cuttings, this opera reflects a dramatic period in the life of the young dauphin Frederick. In order to escape from the military drill imposed on him by his father, the Soldier King, the musically highly-talented Frederick attempts to flee to England, using the help of the young lieutenant Hans Hermann von Katte, to whom he is said to stand in a homoerotic relation.
Their flight attempts are thwarted and a court martial sentences Katte to life imprisonment in a fortress. However, in a blatant perversion of justice, the King imposed the death sentence instead.
Friedrich was pardoned, but forced to watch as his friend was executed by sword.
At the premiere, performed at the end of 1999, the opera in the Schlosstheater Rheinsberg was played in the flutist version. This time round, the rendition will be performed by 10 soilist strings, four flutes, three trombones, a harpsichord and percussion.
